The rise of U.K grime has been a surprising but exciting one. Starting in the streets of London, those with a passion for music used their lyrics to talk about the harsh realities of their environment and how they see the world. This caused a wave of popularity as people related to the lyrics and supported artists they share a postcode with.
A couple of these names included Dizzie Rascal and Wiley, who paved the way for the now big names we see in the top charts today. Grime made its appearance and the rest of the UK and even the world heard what London’s grime scene was about and everyone took notice. As well as the hard hitting lyrics, image was everything and fashion really has been a big partner in its success.
As the music grew, fans took notice of what their favourite rappers were wearing and brands like Ed Hardy took off after Skepta’s single “Ed Hardy Party” was released. Over the years grime has had its ups and downs in popularity but in 2014 things really started to take off again and the U.K talent has earned its place amongst the world’s greats. This really is evident when we take a look at this year’s London Fashion Week, BOSS hired the one and only Dave to perform its opening show. Also Pa Salieu was asked to front A-COLD-WALL’s upcoming seasonal campaign and PUMA has welcomed BackRoad Gee as their newest brand ambassador. We all need to stop and take note of just how influential these artists were becoming.
The rap legend AJ Tracey has talked about the role fashion plays within his creativity and has referenced it as all part of the culture. He talked about how rap is a form of expression and the clothes he wears just enhances that and lets the world know who they’re dealing with.
UK Grime is only going up from here and as more and more people stop and take interest in the lyrics, apparently the fashion world will follow.
